At EnviroSustain, we have built on a resilient foundation of promoting flexible working models and family-friendly practices for many years. This enables us to facilitate a productive and happy team and promote an ideal work-life balance for all our employees.

We know that not everyone is an early bird or a night owl, that you might want to take a long walk at lunch time to get away from your screen or go to the gym during its quiet hours.

We realise that you might want to visit family for a few weeks, work from a quiet café or even take the plunge and move to a different country. We understand the struggles of childcare during the school holidays, unexpected sickness, or doctors’ appointments and that sometimes, life just happens. Because we’re all human, and we wanted to create a workplace that fits in with your life, not be a detriment to it.

Above all, our corporate imperative is to ensure continuous health and well-being of our employees. And we’re always in consultation with our staff via annual surveys and development meetings, to understand where and when changes need to be made.

At the time that we started out with EnviroSustain, it was unusual to have a workforce that was afforded so much flexibility in the way they work. I was keen from the start to allow our staff the choice not only in their location, but also their working hours, to allow them a better work-life balance. Over the years, we have built a team that are experts in their field and highly satisfied with how we treat them as a valued employee.

Our company benefits include:

Remote work: Our team members are currently based in ten locations (Berlin, Flensburg, Hamburg, Lübeck, Kassel, Frankfurt area, Westerwald area, Ravensburg, Munich, and London) with just over 50% based in the Berlin head office. You’re free to work from a location that suits you.
Truly flexible hours: Like waking up at 5am to get on with your day? Or prefer working in the evening once the kids have gone to bed? You’re free to work the hours that fit around your life.
Part-time options: Around 30% of our team are employed on a part-time basis and we offer support for those returning to work after a career break or parental leave.

Climate Positive Workforce

We offset our carbon footprint via Ecologi

In December of 2021, we signed up with Ecologi as a Climate Positive Workforce. This enables us to offset the emissions from our team’s personal and professional lives by planting trees and funding climate projects. The projects supported include:

Reforestation and rewilding projects
Energy efficient cook stoves
Renewable energy projects

Having a positive impact

ES has always supported environmental and social charities, as well as climate action, such as supporting Fridays for Future and their Global Climate Strikes. As the planet spirals further into the climate crisis, we are very clear that we wish to have a more positive impact on the local community and the environment.

In January 2022, we began our ‘impact of the month’ initiative, where each month we support a different charitable cause aligned with our mission or values.

Today, 20th March marks World Rewilding Day 2024 and people across the planet will be celebrating by raising awareness of the rewilding practice and why our world is in dire need of it. 🦦🦇🦅 As a partner of @rewildingeurope, we believe that rewilding landscapes and encouraging species reintroduction is a huge step towards more balanced ecosystems which support all life on Earth. Europe’s nature is in alarming decline, with more than 80% of habitats in poor condition. 🌿 Yesterday the European Parliament gave the green-light to the Nature Restoration Law 🌳 The regulation is part of the EU Green Deal. To reach the overall targets, member states must restore at least 30% of habitats covered by the new law (from forests, grasslands and wetlands to rivers, lakes and coral beds) from a poor to a good condition by 2030, increasing to 60% by 2040, and 90% by 2050. 🌎 The law also demands a positive trend in several indicators in forest ecosystems and an additional three billion trees to be planted. 🌳 While there was much opposition and the targets were watered down from the original proposals, it’s a great step forward for nature. The text will now go to the Council, where member states will hold the final vote. This year has passed in the very busy blink of an eye and for the ES team it has been one of impact, change and growth. 🌳💥 Our most positive achievement for 2023 has definitely been the start of our partnership with @rewildingeurope which sees us support their European Wildlife Comeback Fund for the next ten years, as well as other fundraising, consultancy work on their new offices and volunteering opportunities for the team. Another highlight was our trip to Barcelona in April for the @gbciofficial Europe Circle event where we got to spend an interesting time with fellow sustainability professionals - we can’t wait for Athens next! Throughout the year we have begun the internal processes of assessing our materiality in order to improve our own ESG reporting and measurement and have taken the time to consult with staff, clients and partners so that we can provide the best service possible. We would like to thank the team for their efforts delivering work diligently and wish our clients, partners and the wider industry a restful end to the year. Each year Christmas parcels are sent out to ES staff by our resident holiday Elf, Stefanie!  Contents of this year’s packages were sourced from companies offering sustainable products: 🍿Artisan Popkorn-Konditorei @knallepopkorn a small, climate neutral business in Berlin and their produce is packaged by disabled people working to their strengths at @mosaik_berlin 🐝 The honey was produced over the summer by the bees of our very own Ingemar Hunold in Kassel. 🍪The Pfefferkuchen (traditional spiced biscuits) were a recommendation by our colleague Olaf from Georg Gräfe, a hard working family business. 🍫Chocolate from the @dechocolatemakers – it took a while to arrive, but surely that’s no surprise when the cocoa is sailed by ship from South America to Amsterdam, from where the chocolate is distributed twice a year by bike to other destinations.  🌳A coaster with the tree of life motif celebrating our partnership with Rewilding Europe comes from @greenpicks.de a marketplace for sustainable products.   🕯 @ursprung_handelsverbund (Angel candles), produced by people working for the @christophorus.gemeinschaft an organisation that supports the integration and cooperation of disabled and non-disabled people. 🎄 Other edible items and the Christmas Tea were bought from the local eco-supermarket @alnatura   ❄️The seasonal greeting from the ES management team was turned into a card designed in house by Sam Wheeler using beautiful imagery from Rewilding Europe and printed by @dieumweltdruckerei.   📦To ensure the contents of the parcel reached their destination safely, existing packaging material from deliveries was used as well as material bought from @biobienecom such as padding made from grass. 🧑🏼‍🎄Once all the parcels were packed it was time for a little exercise: 8 parcels at a time, 16kg in total, were transported by bike and trailer to the nearest post office

We’re proud to have been an @ecologi_hq member for 2 years! 💚 That’s 24 months of climate positive action. Earlier this week, some of the ES team and @rewildingoderdelta joined forces for a cleaner Ina river in Western Poland 💚🌎 They cleaned up a section of about 4 km of the Ina River from canoes (between Goleniow and Stargard). In 2015, Member States of the United Nations made a universal promise to leave no one behind through the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Now in 2023, we have reached the mid-point in the timeline to achieve the SDGs by 2023 and to make good on that global promise but at half-time, we have only 15% of the goals are on track. Global Goals Week which runs from 15-24 September is a shared commitment between 150+ partners across civil society, business, academia, and the UN system to accelerate action on the SDGs. EnviroSustain and @rewildingoderdelta (ROD) join forces for a cleaner Ina river in Western Poland on the 12 September as part of our partnership with Rewilding Europe. 🌎🏞 On the planned team day, we will clean up a section of about 4 km of the Ina River from canoes (between Goleniow and Stargard). We will also take the opportunity to talk to a local tourism partner who is building a nature campsite and the ROD team about the ecological challenges of the river and the adjacent areas. The rhino pagoda at Berlin Zoo has been shortlisted for the 2023 Architecture Prize 🎉. ES were pleased to support its construction in 2022 as part of our Impact of the Month initiative. The goal of the architectural design was to create a landmark for species conservation and the Berlin Zoo. The building has two parts including a 25 m high, open-air temple tower. It also has several sustainability aspects including an insect-friendly planting concept, solar thermal energy. In February 2023, EnviroSustain announced a long-term partnership with @rewildingeurope This collaboration will see a portion of the EnviroSustain turnover supporting rewilding initiatives for the next ten years, as well as pro bono advice on rewilding-related buildings in the network- such as new offices and rewilding centres. The ES team is spread across Germany (and one in the UK!), with around 50% of staff working from the Berlin office, about 10% from our new Kassel office and the rest working remotely from various locations. So it’s really important that we get together as team to share ideas, collaborate and catch up. We aim to get together four times a year for a mixture of work and fun. For our summer fete this year, we all got active and participated in activities on the ground, on the water and up in the trees of Berlin. We met in the morning for a 28km bike tour around the Nieder Neuendorfer and Tegeler See followed by lunch to refuel ready for the afternoons activities. Some of the team then made their way to Kajakguru in Hessindorf for kayaking and the rest took to the trees for climbing in the Climb Up Kletterwald. To finish the day, we ended with a lovely dinner at Fisherman's Restaurant by the lake at Tegel. We also spent some time in working groups for our services and dedicated time on the third day to conducting a materiality analysis for EnviroSustain, which will inform our ESG strategy and reporting in the coming year. With @earthdaynetwork 2023 coming up tomorrow, we've been thinking about how we can invest in our planet for future generations. Earlier this year we announced a new 10-year partnership with @rewildingeurope, a foundation that supports rewilding landscapes across Europe and helps people to reconnect with wild nature. This partnership marked a new level of commitment in our journey to have a positive impact on the planet. This photo (taken by Florian Mollers for Rewilding Europe), demonstrates the beauty of the wild landscapes that were once a key part of Europe, and we hope will one day be again. We recently announced our partnership with @rewildingeurope and this week, it was time for Dr. Birgit Memminger-Rieve and Ingemar Hunold to pack their rubber boots and really see what it means! While most of the real estate industry made their way to MIPIMWorld in Cannes they explored the beautiful city of Nijmegen in the Netherlands, located on the Waal river close to the German border. This was the first in-person meeting with the Rewilding Europe team and what a place to do it. We entered into this partnership in the knowledge that ESG is more than just NetZero! Now experiencing first-hand how rewilding can play a critical role in mitigating the scale and impact of global warming is exciting and beautiful at the same time! On top of that we got a look at Rewilding Europe´s new office and discussed first ideas of how to transform a heritage protected building into a “club-house” reflecting their identity and values. When Dr Birgit Memminger-Rieve started EnviroSustain in 2001, she was very clear in her vision for the company. “At the time that we started out with EnviroSustain, it was unusual to have a workforce that was afforded so much flexibility in the way they work. I was keen from the start to allow my staff the choice not only in their location, but also their working hours, to allow them a better work-life balance. As a working mother myself, who also happens to be a business leader, it was important to me to create a culture of accountability, where the staff knew that they are trusted to deliver their work in an autonomous way. We allow the team the flexibility to work around their life, and measure performance not based on the hours we see them in the office, but in the outputs in their work.” There is also shown to be a clear link between women and those affected most by climate change and inequality. The UN has a host of information on the issue. It states that the climate crisis is not ‘gender neutral’ with women and girls suffering disproportionately from poverty, resource scarcity and natural disasters resulting from climate change. Efforts to tackle gender inequality and the climate crisis can go hand-in-hand, highlighting the importance of supporting women and girls when thinking about climate mitigation and adaptation. Today is #WorldWildlifeDay a United Nations International day to celebrate all the world's wild animals and plants and the contribution that they make to our lives and the health of the planet. The theme for World Wildlife Day this year is 'Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation'... Last month, we were proud to announce our partnership with Rewilding Europe. As part of this partnership, a portion of our turnover each year will go to supporting the European Wildlife Comeback Fund. Supporting wildlife comeback is one of the core objectives of Rewilding Europe’s mission. In addition to creating the right conditions for wildlife comeback to happen naturally, Rewilding Europe takes active measures such as reintroductions of keystone species and population reinforcements. The fund supports these reintroductions which are often complicated and need flexible and available resources. It aims to facilitate 30 wildlife comeback interventions or initiatives and more than 1,000 individual animals across all of their landscapes. Another year passes and we are still in the grip of the climate crisis. However, at ES still do as much as we can to tackle the crisis and 2022 has been no exception. We set a goal at the start of the year to increase our positive impact as a business and I’m really proud to say that we have done that. As a company, we have kept up with our regular donations to environmental and social causes that we support and we have also successfully completed our first year of our ‘impact of the month’ campaign. This year we marched with Fridays for Future, cycled our way to and from work, planted 16 Berlin city trees, helped local hedgehogs, provided for the seals at Berlin zoo and donated to causes close to our hearts, e. g. supporting children, homeless people, and refugees. ES also completed 12 months as a ‘climate friendly workforce’ with Ecologi, with a carbon reduction amounting to 188.7 tonnes of CO2e and have planted over 22,000 trees through their projects. We have many more big plans for next year including a bigger and better ESG report to encourage and inspire you on your own ESG journey, a very exciting new partnership with Rewilding Europe and team activities already set for January and March - what a way to start the year. I am glad to have moved through the eye of the COVID storm and would once again like to give thanks to our staff for working with so much passion and stepping up their efforts as we become even more busy. Each year, we give a Christmas donation in December. These are suggested by the team members and are often local charities and organisations. This year, we are supporting @seawatchcrew Sea-Watch e.V. is a non-profit initiative dedicated to civilian sea rescue in the central Mediterranean. In the face of an ongoing and state-initiated humanitarian disaster, they are providing acute emergency aid. Thousands of people drown every year in trying to reach a safe haven in the EU, many of them within sight of our banks and beaches. Sea-Watch believe none should die on the run and in the hope of a decent life at the external borders of the European Union. They have two aircraft in operation and three boats on the water. Each year Christmas parcels are sent out to ES staff by our resident holiday Elf, Stefanie! Contents of this year’s packages were sourced from companies offering sustainable products such as: ❄️ @hugo.frosch (hot water bottles) 🕯 Ursprung Handelsverbund (candles), a platform selling products from various social communities and work shops. The candles are produced by people working for the @christophorus.gemeinschaft an organisation that supports the integration and cooperation of disabled and non-disabled people. 🐝 The honey is as local as can be, obtained from @imkerei_fliessgold directly, a very friendly beekeeping family business in the North of Berlin that delivered the jars to my home. 🍫 Other edible items were bought from the local eco-supermarket @alnatura under as much consideration for personal preferences as possible, such as food allergies/intolerances and a vegan lifestyle where applicable and transported by bike. The friendly greeting from the ES management team was turned into a card designed in house by Sam Wheeler around a recent team photo taken by Pauline Kortmann and printed by @dieumweltdruckerei another environmental friendly business with incredibly helpful staff. To ensure the contents of the parcel reached their destination safely, existing packaging material from deliveries was used as well as material bought from @biobienecom such as padding made from grasspaper. Once all the parcels were packed it was time for a little exercise: 6 parcels at a time, 12kg in total, were transported by bike and trailer to the nearest post office from where they were speedily delivered by the CO2 neutral operating carrier DHL to all the hard-working members of the ES team. A couple of weeks ago, EnviroSustain Project Director, Wioletta, took part in a course on creating allergy-friendly buildings. The event was organised by ECARF foundation of Charite Berlin (European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation) and the AFBA (AFBA – Allergy Friendly Buildings Alliance GmbH – Medizin und Bau – Für Gebäude in denen man sich wohlfühlt). Together they have created a new label that aims to reduce allergy sources in a building's construction and operation. It is the first time a real estate label has been created in collaboration with medical specialists, and the aim is to have medical personnel consult on each project. It looks at the allergy sources in a building's local environment, as well as in its technical components and materials. The target is to find suitable solutions to reduce allergens exposure and make the building healthier for all users (thereby reducing sick days and improving productivity). This work is vital considering that up to 30% of the population have a chronic allergy, while 1 in 2 people will develop an allergy in his/her lifetime. Wioletta is now a certified consultant and is able to pass on her knowledge to EnviroSustain's clients! So in January 2022, we began our ‘impact of the month’ initiative, where each month we chose to support a different charitable cause aligned with our mission or values. ES has long been a supporter of the Berlin City Trees Campaign. In 2012, the Berlin Senate @senumvkberlin initiated the city tree campaign "City Trees for Berlin" with the aim of planting additional street trees with the help of donations. Earlier this year, we committed to planting 16 more trees throughout Berlin - 8 in the Spring and 8 in the Autumn. Stefanie and Andrew took part in one of the plantings in the North of the city and Daniel and Wioletta helped with planting in the South of Berlin. We are pleased to say that with these trees, that brings our total to one tree planted for every member of staff. This Autumn, the German Federal Government @bundeskanzler launched the Inflation compensation bonus ‘Inflationsausgleichsprämie’. The voluntary scheme, running from October 2022 until December 2024, allows employers to grant their employees an amount of up to 3,000 euros tax- and contribution-free in addition to their salary. We are pleased to say that ES has chosen to provide this benefit to all of our employees to further support them during this time of increasing costs and financial pressures faced. This month, for our positive impact project, we are supporting Berliner Kältehilfe. The Berlin based program provides shelter, warmth and hot meals for the homeless population in the winter months. @berliner_kaeltehilfe Numerous parishes, associations and initiatives each participate in the aid program with their own offers, e.g. with emergency overnight stays, night cafés, soup kitchens and meeting places. With the temperatures in Berlin starting to plummet, this is vital aid and shelter for many people who are without a home. Using the Kältehilfe website and the Kältehilfe app, you can find the Berlin offers for homeless people all year round with details of open emergency overnight stays and food offers. If you suspect that a person is suffering from the weather conditions, speak politely to them and ask if they need anything or if they want to accept help. Even in summer, sleeping on the street can be life-threatening. It’s been a year since we launched our @ecologi_hq subscription on our 20th business anniversary, so we decided to review our progress and share the impact we’ve had. We kicked off our subscription by planting 20,000 trees in celebration of our anniversary. These trees were planted across costal mangroves in Mozambique and Madagascar. You can read about this on our website. At the end of 2021, we became a Climate Positive Workforce, offsetting all business and employee emissions, including personal carbon footprints. Ecologi enable companies to do this through a monthly subscription that funds reforestation and other carbon avoidance projects such as renewable energy generation, clean cooking stoves, forest protection and access to clean water. Our total carbon reduction amounts to 188.7 tonnes of CO2e, which is equivalent to 145 long haul flights, or 468,165 miles driven in a car! Ecologi makes the whole process so simple, their clear visualisations are a great way to engage the rest of the team with our impact. The results of the GRESB Real Estate assessment for this year are finally out. This year saw the largest number of submissions ever, with 1,820 entities now participating worldwide. Significant growth was once again focused in Europe with Germany passing the 110-participants mark, with a 34% growth in participation. ES is pleased to have supported clients on the reporting of 35 funds this year, an increase on last year of 25%. This covers $22,885.37 million of assets under management. We are also extremely pleased that the average fund score increased by 12% and two clients achieved a four-star rating. We have found this year that funds with structured data management processes achieve a better overall score. This is also supported by having a dedicated person that manages the whole process, an early start to data collection, regular meetings with the team and early tenant involvement. With a 20% growth in participation for the GRESB assessment, the benchmark now covering almost 150,000 individual assets. This growth in Europe and particularly in Germany is reflected in the work we have been focusing on with our clients and we expect growth of our ESG services to continue in the coming year. Earlier in the month, Senior Consultant, Christina, EnviroSustain partner, Ingemar, and his wife, took part in Kassel's cycling event @stadtradeln Over 3 weeks in September the team "EnviroSustain (KS) & Entec" cycled 248 km, avoiding 38.2 kg of CO2 emissions. In total, 1,835 cyclists joined the event, collecting 203,867 km, which meant they saved 31 tonnes of CO2. This International City Cycling campaign aims to encourage as many people as possible to switch to riding their bicycle in their everyday lives. With their campaign, Stadtradeln raises awareness of the multiple benefits of cycling, including climate protection and improved health. At ES, one of our key goals for the year is to have a more positive impact as an organisation. Since the start of 2022, we have been using our ‘Impact of the Month’ campaign to support causes close to our hearts. This month, we bring you a wonderful organisation @hundeheimat_on_tour and they really are part of the ES family. Anna, one of the members of the team, is the daughter of our Managing Director, Frank Burchardi. HeimatHunde is a mobile animal welfare association that are travelling Europe in order to help other non-profits and welfare projects. Anna and her friends Saskia, Valentin and Aaron (plus 9 dogs!) have adapted their two vans so that they can travel directly to animal welfare projects who require their support including distributing food and donations, socialising rescue dogs and helping on-site with any work that needs to be done. We have recently donated to the wonderful Rewilding Europe project "Wild Horses." The last European wild horse died as late as in 1909. But in the past, wild horses roamed through most of Europe - across its deserts, steppes and savannahs, deep forests and high mountains. They were both exterminated and domesticated by our ancestors. Which means that while the original breed has gone, there are still millions of horses, carrying the gene material of these wild forbears. Many of them also live a semi-wild life already, exposed to wild challenges that are step by step refining and bringing back the wild, original traits in them. We support Rewilding Europe in their attempts to reinstate the European wild horse in Croatia, Bulgaria and Portugal.

You might think this looks like an ordinary bowl of porridge, but every meal tells a story. This particular tasty morsel belongs to our employee relations manager, Stefanie. On a cold and early start, Stefanie volunteered alongside some local school students as part of "walk to school week", which aims to encourage active commuting in order to reduce emissions. We've long been proud supporters of the @fridaysforfuture campaign, encouraging the whole team to take part in the marches whenever we can. We met up in the Invalidenpark on Friday 23rd September to listen to speakers, plus performances from Von Wegen Lisbeth and performance poet Veronika Rieger. The protests happened in 270 cities and towns across the country, including Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt and Cologne, aiming to encourage Chancellor Scholz to allocate 100billion Euro towards the fight against climate change. Earlier this month, the team visited Kassel in Hesse. We travelled from all across Germany mostly by train to visit the @documentafifteen an art exhibition that occurs every 5 years. The team went 5 years ago and we decided that it was time for another visit. We also took the time for Birgit, our MD, to give us an update on all things ES and afterwards had productive work meetings about ESG matters. The 7th Hessen Sustainability Day will take place on 29th September 2022. The event is a great opportunity for young and old to get involved with the various aspects of sustainability. There are lots of activities to get involved in - like building your own insect hotel, or taking part in a clothes swap - and delicious international food to taste. Throughout Hessen, people can find out about the entire spectrum of a sustainable lifestyle and become active themselves. We're really excited to be taking part in the event. Some of our consultants will be on hand to chat with between 2-5pm, and we'll be giving a talk at 4pm on the topic of “principle No. 20: Living space should be available and affordable for everyone."

We think that’s about enough fancy terminology for now, don’t you? We’ve covered ESG reporting, transparency, and various guidance and frameworks, but amongst all the jargon it’s easy to forget why it all matters and what the overarching goal is, so let’s take a moment to think about it. The pressure on Earth’s resources is becoming unbearable. Every year, Earth Overshoot Day (the annual date that marks the point when humanity uses more biological resources than the Earth can regenerate within a given year) creeps earlier and earlier. Extreme heat events are becoming more common with forest fires on the rise; species are dying due to habitat loss and food scarcity; our seas are rising and warming leading to devastating floods and enforced migration. All of this and we’re still projected to exceed 1.5 degrees of global warming, despite the 2015 Paris Agreement and subsequent UN promises. As we mentioned at the start of the Summer School, building and construction alone are responsible for 39% of all carbon emissions in the world. The planet needs widespread systemic change, and it’s not enough to wait for governments to lead the way, the private sector needs to proactively seek solutions and play its part. In the last couple of months we've welcomed some new team members to ES. First up is Christina... Christina Mildner has been working as ESG Data Manager for ES at our Kassel office since June 2022. She supports the ESG team primarily in the areas of data management and further development of the company's own ESG tools. Christina is a lawyer and holds a master’s degree in environmental law. For the last 10 years she worked in mining and environmental law in the environmental department of a mining company. For the past 3 years, she has been continuing her education in the field of sustainability and is now looking forward to successfully implementing her knowledge and professional experience at ES. We have recently donated to the wonderful Rewilding Europe project "European Young Rewilders." The scheme aims to inspire and support the next generation of European conservationists to help restore the natural world. With its positive message and emphasis on practical conservation, rewilding is playing an increasingly important role connecting younger generations with nature. Their mission is to create a wilder Europe by uniting young professionals and enthusiasts. Through the creation of a network we will provide members with the tools they need to become active players in the rewilding movement. We first learned about rewilding through the work of Isabella Tree on the Knepp Estate in the UK and the Oostvaardersplassen in the Netherlands. This week, we have another acronym for you - CSRD. The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive is a set of revisions on the Non-financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) - a mandate for sustainability reporting in large public interest businesses. Published in April 2021 by the European Commission in the wake of the EU Green Deal, the CSRD is a piece of legislation requiring large companies, and now many SME’s, to publish regular reporting on their environmental and social activities - so a lot like the NFRD, but more… Companies will have to comply if they have more than 250 employees and more than €40M turnover and/or more than €20 Million in total assets, which is a big step up from the NFRD which only concerned companies of >500 employees, listed businesses, and banks and insurance. Information that will need to be included covers; environmental protection, social responsibility and treatment of employees, respect for human rights, anti-corruption and bribery, and Diversity on company boards. Businesses will be expected to report on this new directive in 2024 for the 2023 financial year, which is closer than it may seem. The time to start collecting data is now! Presented in December 2019, the overarching goal of the EU Green Deal is for Europe to become the first carbon neutral continent by 2050. It provides a roadmap to reduce net emissions by at least 55% from 1990 levels by 2030 and to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. So what’s the plan? The plan is to introduce and support; - Environmentally friendly technologies - Industrial innovation - Private and public transport - Decarbonised energy sector - Energy-efficient buildings - Improving global environmental standards In the European Commission’s work programme for 2021, the revisions and initiatives linked to the European Green Deal climate actions are presented under the ‘Fit-for-55’ package. The package of proposals aims to make the EU ‘fit for 2055’ and to deliver the transformational change needed across our economy, society and industry with the additional goal of in the buildings sector, aiming to retrofit 35 million buildings by 2030 within the EU, thus creating 160,000 jobs in the construction sector alone. Last week we talked about the EU Taxonomy, and this week, we’re sticking to all things financial. In this week’s lesson we will be talking about the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) - what it is, who it applies to and why it matters. The SFDR is a European transparency requirement for financial market participants like banks, investors and asset managers, aiming to reduce the overstating of green credentials and encourage behavioural change in the financial markets. As of March 2021, the SFDR obliges financial market participants to report on the sustainability risks and impacts of a company and its products, on their websites, in pre-contractual information, and in annual reports. The Disclosure regulation is made up of three parts: 1. Addressing sustainability risks and ensuring reporting transparency. 2. Investigating the Principle Adverse Impacts (PIA) of their investments such as greenhouse gas emissions, gender pay gap, energy efficiency, etc. 3. Classification of individual products into three categories depending on their sustainability credentials. The SFDR is formulated in very general terms and does not provide concrete definitions and standards regarding sustainable financial products. As a fairly new regulation, we’ve yet to see how the SFDR affects our industry, and what other standards may be established because of it. This week we’re looking at the EU Taxonomy Regulation which is one of the ten action points listed under the EU Action Plan for Financial Sustainable Growth. So… what is it? The EU taxonomy of sustainable economic activity is a tool to help investors understand whether an economic activity is environmentally sustainable. It is intended to ease and promote the transition to a low-carbon, resource-efficient economy. By establishing a common language between investors, issuers, project promoters and policy makers, it helps investors assess whether the investments they make meet robust environmental standards. It works by providing a threshold for various economic activities. An activity is only considered environmentally sustainable if it contributes significantly to at least one of the six objectives (see above) while not adversely affecting any of the others. The assessment and management of ESG risks is becoming increasingly important for the real estate sector. As more investors commit to aligning their portfolios with the goals of the Paris Agreement, we are seeing a huge growth in the demand for net-zero strategies that incorporate the EU Taxonomy framework. Now we understand what ESG is and why it matters, let’s get down to some actionable steps with our Top 5 Tips for getting started with ESG! Establish your ESG strategy: Plan: identify your objectives and analyse your organisation’s current systems, then draft up a plan on how you’re going to get there. Set interim and end-goal targets to help you review your progress. Do: get started straight away, no matter how small. Check: monitor your results. Adapt: adjust your actions and objectives in accordance with your interim results. Find the right reporting framework(s): there is no one-size-fits-all approach - it will depend on your organisation’s needs. What do you want to report and who are you reporting to? Do your research, or speak with a consultant with specialist knowledge of your industry. Ensure your data is reliable: it doesn’t matter what system or software you use, as long as you can ensure that your data is comprehensive and consistent. You’ll want to check this year against the next one so you can track your progress. Here are some ways to ensure your reporting is up to scratch: - Develop consistent and controlled policies for quantifying and reporting your metrics. - Determine the appropriate format and frequency for reporting. - Make sure external and internal reported metrics align. - Have a solid system for organising your metrics. - Offer comparison figures to demonstrate consistency. - Make sure the preparation and reporting of purpose-led metrics is as rigorous as traditional financial reporting. - Provide context: the best metrics take into account the benchmarks for your industry or geography. Birgit, Oliver, Aurélie and Matias recently attended a presentation of the office redevelopment project 'The Louise' at the 2022 ULI Europe Conference in Brussels. Afterwards, they went on a construction site tour together with Sam Walsh of Patrizia. This ESG monitoring project aims for carbon neutrality and EnviroSustain is supporting them to find the right strategy. Through ESG monitoring, all relevant ESG aspects can be addressed and satisfied, from the early planning stage, to substantial completion and beyond. As a major step, the project team decided not to rely on fossil fuels solely. So now that we’ve defined ESG, we need to know how it’s relevant to the real estate and building sectors, and why you should care. ESG is particularly important in real estate because the built environment is responsible for a massive 39% of the planet’s carbon emissions, with operational emissions (i.e. heating and lighting buildings) accounting for 28% of that. The remainder comes from the embodied carbon used in the creation of building materials like steel and concrete and the processes involved in a building’s life cycle: from its initial construction to its eventual demolition. The sector therefore has a significant opportunity to reduce global emissions by adhering to net zero standards, focusing on reusing and recycling materials, and (preferably) retrofitting existing buildings with sustainable solutions. CO2 emissions have never been higher, with 36.3 billion tons of CO2 equivalents - an increase of 6% from 2020. And if making significant steps to reduce these figures and move towards net zero isn’t enough, what other reasons are there for the sector to take action? 1. Occupier demand: building occupiers, whether in office buildings, hotels, retail or residential, are demanding more sustainable spaces and better performing buildings to reduce their own costs and carbon emissions. 2. Shareholder, stakeholder and investor expectations: as awareness of the environmental impact of buildings increases, so does the realisation that poor performing buildings will offer significant investment risk. As we said in lesson one, more and more investors are taking ESG into consideration when choosing where to place their money. 3. European and national regulation: as we will discuss later in the Summer School, tighter regulations such as the EU Taxonomy, net zero commitments and reporting requirements are forcing action. It won’t be long until a moral obligation becomes a legal one. If that doesn’t give you pause for thought, we don’t know what will. We’ll see you next week for Lesson 3, where insights become action.

Given that it will be a recurring topic and one of our focuses for this Summer School, we thought we’d start by explaining… What is ESG? ESG = Environmental. Social. Governance. Maybe you’re thinking “yeah, I know the words, but what do they MEAN?” Sometimes referred to as ‘the triple bottom line’ - ESG are the three pillars of sustainability within business theory. The idea is that a company's value should be founded on its social and environmental impact and its good governance, as much as its profitability. Increasingly, investors are taking ESG factors into account when screening a company’s operations for investment suitability. Consequently, adhering to these standards tells potential investors that a business is committed to doing good, and can provide quantifiable data to demonstrate this. Let’s break down the categories. Environmental - considers how a company performs as a steward of nature: what are its emissions? How does it deal with waste? What are the knock on effects of its supply chain? Social - looks at how a company manages its relationship with its employees, suppliers, customers, and the wider community. Governance - refers to the way a company is run: how transparent is it? The EnviroSustain team had a fantastic trip to Segler-Vereinigung Tegel just outside Berlin earlier this month. We had a morning of talks and presentations from members in the team, followed by an afternoon of games and relaxing by the lake. There was even a mini Olympic competition involving badminton, table tennis, KUBB and Palets Breton, with prizes for the best teams. We rounded the day off with a bbq and some music from George Lindemann. The Humboldt Forum in Berlin is a platform for culture and science, for exchange and debate. The EnviroSustain team recently went on a very interesting tour to learn more. Our top takeaways: - The @humboldtforum was once the site of courtly receptions, and now hosts exciting events. - The Humboldt terraces complement the Lustgarten with a grove of trees and 13,000 plants from Eurasia, South and North America. - The passage acts as a bridge between the Lustgarten and Schlossplatz and also between the modern and baroque architecture that makes up the site. As part of our team meeting activities in May, we visited ‘the gardens of the world’ @gaertenderwelt in Berlin. 🌳👨‍🌾 You can go on a world tour in just one day: admire exotic flowers and plants from the cable car or from close up, discover foreign cultures, enjoy music under the open sky, run riot around in the playgrounds (which we did of course) or simply relax. The team had a great time seeing the sights from the cable car and exploring the maze. Although the day started with a thunderstorm and heavy rain, that wasn’t going to put the team off from cycling to the office as part of Berlin's cycling campaign @Stadtradeln. The rain wasn’t that bad and it just meant we had the paths pretty much to ourselves. We all cycled to work - no mean feat! It took Stefanie 22km, Birgit 16km and Aurelie 10km. To get home, Stefanie cycled some of the way and then took the train but Birgit and Aurelie made it all the way back on their bikes. Birgit, Matías, Wioletta, Miriam, Aurélie and Stefanie officially cycled 718 km in total for 2022, which is 100 km more than in the last 2 years (CO2 savings: 111 kg). Next year, we are aiming for 1,000! This International City Cycling campaign aims to encourage as many people as possible to switch to riding their bicycle in their everyday lives. With their campaign, Stadtradeln raises awareness of the multiple benefits of cycling, including climate protection and improved health. How far do you cycle for your commute? Today marks the UN’s World Oceans Day. The ocean covers more than two thirds of the planet and is a life source for humanity and every organism that inhabits the Earth. The ocean produces 50% of the planet’s oxygen, provides a home to countless species and a food source for many others, while its currents influence the weather and our climate. Despite its importance, the ocean has long been depleted and neglected by humans and it needs our help. 90% of the World's big fish populations are exhausted, 50% of coral reefs have been destroyed, and global warming has caused the icecaps to melt, altering the salinity and density of the water. The planet's resources are finite. Yesterday's Earth Overshoot day marked the day on which we surpassed the Earth's ability to regenerate what we've used. So what can the construction sector do to reduce our emissions and delay Earth Overshoot Day in the future? 1. Reuse existing building structures instead of building new buildings: whether retrofitting your existing building to be more energy efficient (heating, ventilation, HVAC, lighting and water systems) or adaptive reuse for preservation of historic buildings, there are significant time, carbon and cost saving benefits. 2. Build with reused or recycled materials: many construction materials can be reused including (but not limited to) concrete, bricks/blocks, timber, paving, glass and metals. Where new construction is necessary, there should be a focus on reducing waste and using recyclable or low-carbon products. 3. Stop using fossil fuels altogether: Switching to clean energy providers or investing in on-site renewables can reduce costs in the long-term as well as shrinking your carbon footprint. “Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year.” This year, Germany’s Overshoot Day falls on the 4th of May, a day earlier than last year. If the entire world consumed as we do in Germany, this is the day on which we would exceed our planet's natural resources. Building and construction is responsible for a huge percentage of our overall carbon emissions, contributing a massive 39%, with operation emissions (heating, cooling, light etc.) accounting for another 28%. He is also one of our three DGNB auditors. Giving back to our community where we can is really important to us, and we try to give both our time and money generously. We do this primarily through monetary donations and fundraisers. Some of the causes we contribute to financially are; 🎋 @rettetdenregenwald_org : The German NPO Rainforest Rescue which is dedicated to rainforest protection. 🌱 @plantfortheplanet_official : Working with children to fight for their future by planting a million trees in each country. NABU Berlin e.V: Who run a range of important environmental conservation projects in Germany’s capital. We also support; 🌳 @ecologi_hq , whose mission it is to offset emissions through planting trees. For our 20th anniversary celebrations in November 2021, we planted 20,000 trees with Ecologi. 🚲 Our team got involved in the international wide City Cycling campaign, @stadtradeln , by cycling 600km collectively. EnviroSustain at Hessen Sustainability Day 2022

Sustainable. Colourful. Liveable. Actively shaping Hessen. The 7 th Hessian Sustainability Day will take place on 29 th September. The event is a great opportunity for young and old to get involved with the various aspects of sustainability. There will be informative, entertaining and interactive activities and events throughout the day - on site and digitally. Consult with sustainability experts – 29 th September 2022 from 2-5pm. As part of the day, our consultants will be available for architects, engineers and students of these disciplines between 2 and 5 p.m. and offer a lecture on the basis of a practical example for a deeper discussion from 4 p.m. onwards. The lecture will last about 30 minutes so that there will be time for exchange afterwards. Our contribution deals with “principle No. 20: Living space is available and affordable for everyone.“ About the event According to the day’s motto "Sustainable. Colourful. Liveable. Actively Shaping Hessen", insect hotels are built, clothes swapping campaigns are launched or intercultural food events are organised. Parents and teachers explain to children which species need meadows and forests for their survival, or work together to remove harmful plastic from the landscape in a rubbish collection campaign. Schools and associations initiate theme weeks to educate about sustainable solutions in the areas of energy, consumption or mobility. Throughout Hessen, people can find out about the entire spectrum of a sustainable lifestyle and become active themselves. You can find out more here.
